Avoiding Moving Scams

Moving is an exciting time in your life whether you're relocating for a new job, just wanting to start over some place new or buying your first home. To make sure your move is successful, you have to be aware of moving scams. There's nothing worse that being slammed with a bill on moving day that is twice the amount you agreed on, all the while your possessions are held hostage.

The best way to avoid a moving scam is to rent a truck and move yourself. Of course that is not always an option so become well informed so you can spot a scam a mile away and not get taken for a ride. Below are some tips to help you avoid a moving scam.

  • Use only movers that are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
  • Never sign a blank document or contract.
  • Get the estimate in writing. Never agree to an oral estimate.
  • Ask for an inventory list after your belongings have been loaded. This should state the items and their condition.
  • If the company shows up in a generic rental truck, it's best to walk away. That is a big clue that they will most likely scam you. A true company will have their own fleet of vehicles.
  • If you call a moving company make sure they have a legitimate name not something generic like 'moving company.'
  • Make sure the moving company has insurance.
  • Know your rights and responsibilities when you move
